The picturesque winery is situated in Melbourne's North-East Ranges, 2km north of the Flowerdale Hotel on the main Whittlesea - Yea Road. It is a pleasant one hour drive from Melbourne.
The 2.5 hectares of vines are planted beside the Break O'Day Creek in furtile alluvial soil. The first vines were planted in 1976.
The winery was taken over in 1999 by the present vignerons Mick and Kathy Dumendzic. Their aim is to maintain the winery as a small concern producing high quality limited release wines with distinctive varietal and regional character.
The smallness of the operation allows each process of wine making, from producing and picking, to pressing and bottling, to be carried out by hand with particular attention.
Mick and Kathy have a philosophy of keeping things pure and natural. Their wine making is unique in that each step is perfomed without any additives which speed up processes and change the character of the natural grape, such as synthetic yeasts, sedimenting agents, sulphur, and other chemical preservatives.
On Saturday 7th February 2009, Mick and Kathy's Flowerdale home was destroyed in the Black Saturday Fire, but they are O.K. Fortunately most of the vines were spared so it is business as usual (well almost). The cellar door is still closed however tastings can be made at our stall at the Queen Victoria Market Friday - Sunday till 4pm.
